The Unconditioned full Stephen Batchelor Friday, 2 March 2012 A much quoted verse attributed to the Buddha declares that were there not "an Unborn, an Unbecome, an Unmade and an Unconditioned, no escape would be known from what is born, become, made and conditioned" (Udana. 6:8). This text is often cited to show how the Buddha's enlightenment involves insight into a transcendent and absolute truth that lies beyond the conditioned world. Stephen will offer a detailed and critical analysis of this verse in an attempt to locate it in its original context and arrive at a clearer understanding of what it means. In addition to talks and discussion, throughout the day time will also be spent in silent reflection and meditation. Towards a Secular Buddhism full with Stephen Batchelor Saturday, 3 March 2012 This day of talks, discussion and meditation will explore the emergence of a secular vision of Buddhism, which discards traditional Indian Buddhist doctrines such as reincarnation. Is this process of secularisation a healthy development in the coming of Buddhism to the West, which may enrich our understanding of the Dharma, or does it risk "throwing the baby out with the bathwater," turning Buddhism into a culture of self-help and psychotherapy? These and other questions will be considered in the light of our contemporary understanding of the world, as well as the teachings of the Buddha as recorded in the Pali Canon. Meditation for Life full with Martine and Stephen Batchelor Sunday, 4 March 2012 This day will explore the foundational practices of Buddhist meditation: mindfulness, concentration, and experiential enquiry. These exercises will be presented as an integral part of a way of life that includes ethical responsibility and reflective, philosophical awareness. In addition to periods of sitting and walking, there will be formal meditation instruction, talks and discussions. To create an atmosphere of quiet contemplation, the day will be conducted in silence. We welcome beginners as well as those with an established meditation practice. Wise Love and Creative Equanimity full with Martine Batchelor Monday, 5 March, 2012 During this daylong we will explore how to cultivate wise love through the practices of listening and loving kindness in the morning. In the afternoon we will look at equanimity and what it means in our daily lives through meditating on the breath and developing acceptance. | Additional Talks -
