But for those that don't know. I thought I'd just give a quick summary. 3 00:00:12.500 --> 00:00:16.920 Guy: Dhana is a Pali word meaning generosity, gift, or giving. 4 00:00:17.800 --> 00:00:24.309 Guy: In the time of the Buddha the teachings were offered freely as a form of Dana from the teachers to the lay community. 5 00:00:25.670 --> 00:00:29.239 Guy: The early teachers received no payment for their instruction. 6 00:00:29.970 --> 00:00:38.290 Guy: and in turn the community saw to it, through their generosity, their data, that the basic needs of the monks and the nuns were taken care of. 7 00:00:40.050 --> 00:00:43.510 Guy: The giving data was seen to open up the heart. 8 00:00:43.570 --> 00:00:49.330 Guy: diminish one's self-absorption, and place value on the wellbeing of others. 9 00:00:50.690 --> 00:01:02.139 Guy: simple gestures, such as offering a flower. an active service. a kind thought or a simple meal were seen as sincere forms of practice 10 00:01:05.110 --> 00:01:15.790 Guy: in the West. We do not have much of a monastic tradition. Insight teachers, nonetheless, still tend to follow the ancient tradition. Ancient tradition of Dhana. 11 00:01:18.260 --> 00:01:24.400 Guy: Steven, Winton, and Lenore are continuing with that tradition by not charging for the teachings 12 00:01:25.760 --> 00:01:38.640 Guy: they have all dedicated a significant part of their lives to serving the Dharma. and invested a lot of time in the planning of this retreat. and in the development of the knowledge and wisdom that they have gifted to us this week. 13 00:01:40.480 --> 00:01:48.360 Guy: It is for these reasons that I ask you all to help with a gift of Dana to them in recognition of their gift. To us 14 00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:57.719 Guy: people sometimes struggle to know how much to give, and the answer is always unique to each person. 15 00:01:59.390 --> 00:02:02.909 Guy: Any amount should, of course, take into consideration 16 00:02:03.010 --> 00:02:06.670 Guy: your own circumstances, and is entirely up to you 17 00:02:09.000 --> 00:02:14.829 Guy: for me. I always look into my heart and ask myself what feels right. 18 00:02:15.880 --> 00:02:28.060 Guy: I reflect on the amount that I will feel at peace with. and I also reflect on the role generosity has played in my life. along with its importance to my journey on the path. 19 00:02:29.700 --> 00:02:32.920 Guy: Such reflections have never failed to give me my answer. 20 00:02:35.760 --> 00:02:40.829 Guy: To give a gift of Dana.
