Dependent Arising -
an exploration

Dependent Arising, or Dependent Origination, is the Buddha’s account of the principle of causality – the law of cause and effect, or action and consequence.

Everything that exists or happens is an outcome of the circumstances – the causes and conditions – that gave rise to it. This simple yet profound idea is a foundation of the great Buddhist insights of impermanence, emptiness, not self and karma, and understanding it fully supports Awakening, the deepest freedom of heart and mind.

In this workshop, a follow up to last year’s workshop on anatta (not self), we will use meditation, dyad (pairs) practice and small group discussion to explore Dependent Arising and what it means for us and our practice.

It is not necessary to have attended the previous year’s workshop, but prior insight meditation retreat experience and/or study of the Buddha’s teachings would be beneficial.
When: Sunday 17th June
Times: 10 am - 5 pm
Where: Benledi House, 186 Glebe Point Rd, Glebe (Cnr Wigram Rd)

About the Teachers
Jill Shepherd is a graduate of the IMS / Spirit Rock teacher training program in the USA, under the guidance of Joseph Goldstein and Gil Fronsdal. Currently, she divides her time between Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, teaching vipassana and brahma vihara retreats and offering ongoing study and practice groups focused on bringing the dharma into daily life.
Gawaine Powell Davies became interested in Buddhist ideas in his teens, and have been practising seriously since 2005. He is particularly interested in bringing Buddhist ideas to life and exploring how they apply in everyday life.
Sydney Insight Meditators acknowledges the Gadigal, Dharug and Dharawal peoples, the traditional custodians of the lands on which SIM is located. We acknowledge their ongoing connection to the land, water, sky, and animals. We pay our respects to the Elders, past, present, and emerging.
